At some point in our lives, we realize that being happy, content and feeling satisfied is not going to happen unless we put ourselves and true desires high up on the priority list. As women, and certainly as mothers, we learn from a young age to put everyone else first. We get really skilled at making everyone else happy and taking care of everyone else. We put ourselves at the bottom of the to-do list. That is our fatal mistake.
I’m not saying that we should not take care of others, because part of doing that is what makes us happy. I’m saying that for us to be truly happy we need to take care of ourselves on a regular, daily basis, as well.
Part of taking care of yourself is finding things to do that make you feel good about yourself, balanced and nourished… physically, mentally and spiritually. Sometimes that might be the little things like taking a long soak in your tub in the quiet stillness, sometimes it may need to be something bigger like planning and taking that trip you’ve not dared to let yourself think about.
Make self-care your new best habit!
Whatever you need, and feel deeply in your soul, you need to find a way to do, even if it’s just the planning stage. If you spend your time thinking about something every day, that’s a really good place to start. It could be re-decorating one room in your house, it could be taking a cooking class, joining a retreat for women in Italy, or even just reading a book a week, it could be quitting the job that you now find boring or exhausting, or even leaving a relationship that has run its course. Some choices are easy, some may be really, really difficult. You may get stuck, many times, but, if you keep thinking about it, that is your soul telling you that you need it! Find a way to make some changes.
“TRUST YOUR CRAZY IDEAS”. About five years ago, I saw this expression on a journal and began to adopt this as the motto into my own life. It has slowly changed my life. Things that I thought about and would usually dismiss, I decided to try. I put my ideas out into my conscious and the world and made a plan to make them happen. Sometimes, just asking is enough. Ask the universe what you want and then be prepared to take advantage of whatever comes your way. Just be open. Open your heart and open your mind.
Remember, you don’t have to start big if it is far out of your comfort zone. But nothing really rewarding or truly magical happens inside that zone. So, even if it’s a small thing, start there. It’s something. It’s always better than nothing.
You are still allowed to dream – at any age and in any stage of your life. Living your dreams can happen at any age if you are open to the possibilities. Once you get the hang of taking care of the little things, the bigger things will not seem so big. That’s when your crazy ideas come into play.
My dreams have been about traveling to Italy – as often as I can. I started with a trip with my husband and then my mom, and then my children for 28 days on my own. As soon as I return I start planning and scheming how to get back again. There is always a dream, or what some people may call a “crazy idea”. But where I once did not dare to say them out loud, now I write them down, I visualize them mentally, I say them out loud. I trust them. And more often than not, they do not let me down.
MY CRAZY IDEA
So, my best ideas come to me when I am just waking up, or when I’m on vacation, or in my hot tub. It is prime Crazy Idea Time for me when I am relaxed and then my creativity starts to just flow freely. So I keep a notepad by my bed, and my phone to put in notes. If you have a smartphone and know how to use your notes, then use this feature. It has saved me so many times. If you don’t know how, ask someone. Trust me on this.
Recently I have been wanting to phase out of my current eCommerce business. It has morphed into something that is not “me”. It just does not feel authentic, and I am tired of pimping my friends to shop with me. So that has been in the works for a few months.
But, back to my crazy new idea. Then as I was planning yet another big family trip to Europe and also a trip with my girlfriends again to the Amalfi Coast, it just hit me. “Terri, you should do this for other people like your business. You know Italy, you love Italy and anyone you have ever taken on a trip has raved about it!” I almost dismissed the idea, but so many times people have told me that I should be doing exactly that and, I mean, how could I say no to more Italy? So, I decided not to say “no”. I said, “maybe” and then got to work researching my idea. My research and conversations with my contacts in Italy all said thumbs up and my instincts and gut said “yes”. My fear said, “Whoa – hold on a minute! You have children and a husband and it’s so scary!”
I am at a point in my life where I am just not going to let fear rule me. So, I told fear that it was going to have to muddle through this because I was going to do this no matter how scary. I like Trust more than Fear anyhow. Fear just keeps showing up, uninvited, trying to muck everything up. But everyone needs a little fear to balance out all of that wild, reckless, creativity and desire. So we are learning to live in harmony. It’s not that I am fearless, I just refuse to let fear win and take all.
So, now my new focus will be this lifestyle blog for women who want to live their best, most authentic lives. And, ta-da, taking women on wonderful, slow-paced, dolce far niente “Soul Trips“, a retreat for women to Italy, specifically to some of the most amazing places in la bella, Italia.
As part of Curated Over 40, I am hosting a small, intimate and authentic retreat for women in Italy. “Soul Trips” will enrich your mind and soul. I call it Soul Trip because it’s a retreat for women to Italy where your senses will be awakened and your soul will be enriched by this type of travel.
I hope that after reading this you will think about ways to put a little more self-care into your daily living. And dare to dream. Dream big, dream in color, dream out loud. And start asking for what you want!
